Comprised of family letters, writings, and printed items and photographs of Samuel Rutherford Houston and family. The letters are primarily those of Samuel Rutherford Houston and Rutherford R. Houston to each other, as well as a few written by other family members. Letters primarily relate to their education, religious life, church and family news, with some mentions of tensions between North and South and preparations for the Civil War in Virginia. Among the printed items and graphic materials are several photographs of the Houston family. The writings consist of sermons, short stories, diaries and diary fragments. Several detached diary pages contain entires describing Samuel R. Houston's stint as a missionary in Greece, as well as a journal kept by his fellow missionary, Reverend G. W. Leyburn. Houston's civilian Civil War diary includes entries on his daily activities, sermons preached, and materials read, as well as his thoughts on the war and war news. Later diary pages (1883-1888) refer to harsh winters in the mountains and include entries by Margaret P. Houston describing weather, birds, insects and fauna.

Samuel Rutherford Houston (1806-1887) of Rockbridge County, Va., was a planter, school teacher, and a Presbyterian minister, as his father and grandfather had been. He received his theological training at Union Theological Seminary in Virginia, after graduating from Dickinson College. He was posted to a mission in Scio, Greece, in 1834, and served there with the Rev. George W. Leyburn.
